On Friday, March 8, 2024, SAWIS successfully hosted a community forum on International Women’s Day. The forum featured songs, skits, videos, and discussion about challenges faced in the day-to-day lives of immigrant women and girls, as well as the inequities that create barriers to their full inclusion in Canadian society by creating awareness and strengthening community voices. Community women also addressed about the connections to policies, programs, and practices that create inequitable outcomes when accessing employment, housing, healthcare, childcare, safety nets, and childcare. They also highlighted the connections of these policies, programs, and practices to decisions made about wars and genocides abroad. More than 100 community people attended the event. We also heard from a panel of labour, women, immigrant, and childcare advocates about their work and the need to meaningfully engage and amplify the leadership of communities affected by inequities. We would like to thank all of the community members who attended, along with our partners and local representatives. Special thanks to community women leaders, and youth leaders for your continued support. ... See MoreSee Less

SAWIS will be attending the 26th Metropolis conference, hosted in Montreal, QB. This conference is a space for interaction, dialogue, and learning among settlement service providers, practitioners, policy makers, researchers and civil society on topics related to migration, integration and inclusion.

SAWIS will be co-presenting with UofT and McMaster to discuss reflections and implications from community-engaged research with Bangladeshi migrants who receive services from South Asian Women’s and Immigrants’ Services (SAWIS). The roundtable aims to discuss structural inequities resulting from migration, labor market discrimination, and gender-based violence, including insights on how SAWIS’s holistic approach to mutual aid, direct service, and advocacy seeks to foster social change for racialized immigrant women in Toronto’s East Danforth neighborhoods.

VIDEO OF SKIT FROM International Women's Day Toronto 2024!

On Saturday, March 2, community women participated in the annual International Women's Day rally and march in Toronto. We stood with communities across Toronto to demand an end to the violence, exploitation, and indignities that affect women across the world.

"No one is free until we are all free!" In line with this year's call to action, leaders from the community presented a skit that highlights the conversations taking place among precariously employed immigrant women. Their skit highlights the issues that are at the forefront of mainstream discussions. They discussed challenges in their day-to-day lives and analyzed the connections to policies, programs, and practices that create inequitable outcomes when accessing employment, housing, healthcare, childcare, safety nets, and childcare. Community women also highlighted the connections of these policies, programs, and practices to decisions made about wars and genocides abroad.

We must continue to advocate for reforms that recognize the dignity and rights of all. SAWIS is hosting a community forum in the community on the occasion of IWD to bridge and continue the conversations. We invite community members, activists, and policy stakeholders to join us at on Friday, March 8 @2 PM at the Oakridge Community Center (63 Pharmacy Ave).
