NEW ROOTS - Resources for Immigrant Seniors
SAWIS integrates supports for seniors as a part of our services, public education, and civic engagement initiatives. These efforts align with our commitment to support vulnerable community members access accurate and reliable information regarding employment, income support programs, settlement programs, health and other services/supports.
With funding from Woodgreen Community Services, SAWIS organized a series of public education workshops for low-income and immigrant seniors between September 2025 to March 2026. Through the workshops, staff and peer workers designed a toolkit for seniors—especially newcomer, refugee, permanent resident, and immigrant seniors—who are navigating life in Canada. It is written in plain language and organized around real-life situations, not government programs or complex systems.
You can use this guide to:
- Look up information when a problem or concern comes up
- Prepare questions before appointments
- Bring it with you to a doctor, settlement worker, peer educator, housing worker, orlegal clinic
- Share it with a trusted family member or caregiver to support understanding
