Dear Community Members,

This is a reminder that SAWIS will host its Annual General Meeting on Sunday, August 29, 2024 @ Oakridge Community Center (63 Pharmacy Ave) from 2-4 PM.

Annual General Meetings allow our members to participate in governance and decision-making for the organization. Every year, our members select and decide our team of officers and board members through a member voting process. We believe in accountability and transparent leadership and request our members to participate in the process during our AGM.

To be an eligible voter, you must have been involved with SAWIS for more than 6 months. To check you eligibility as a voter and if you are interested in voting, please contact us and speak to our Search and Elections Committee.

Happening this Sunday!

On Sunday, September 15, communities across countries will be standing up against systemic racism and injustices faced by newcomers who are blocked from basic needs and supports because of their immigration status.

Status for all is not just about immigration. It is also about addressing GBV faced by women, exploitation faced by worker's, ensuring access to health services, and on. It is about ensuring the security of people, so that we can fight for the security of all!

If you are interested but require supports to attend, please contact our office so that we are able to assist.People across the country are struggling to access necessities like health care, food and housing. While billionaires and bad bosses rack up profits, they blame newcomers and migrants for the affordability crisis, hoping we don’t notice their corporate greed and poor government policies.

As a collective, we must say NO TO RACISM, YES TO IMMIGRANT JUSTICE!

As nurses and health-care professionals, we know that immigrant justice is good health-care policy.

On Sept 15, join the Migrant Rights Network Toronto action at 1PM to push for justice, #StatusForAll and an end to scapegoating and racism!

Community Forum Recap

On August 18, SAWRO hosted a successful community forum attended by over 100 community members. The event facilitated important discussions on global and local issues and featured two key panels.

The first panel, including various community stakeholders and addressed the economic, political, and social crises affecting their communities. They shared insights on the challenges faced and explored strategies for collective action and advocacy to overcome these crises.

The second panel highlighted perspectives from women leaders in our community. They answered critical questions about the situation in Bangladesh and its impact on racialized and immigrant communities in Canada. Discussions covered the lessons learned from organizing, the responsibilities we have in advocating for economic, social, and political security, and how global events relate to local challenges.

Dear Community Members,

As many members of our community, staff, and volunteers belong to and/or have family members from Bangladesh, we are closely monitoring the progressing situation in Bangladesh.

For the people of Bangladesh and the diasporas, the fall of a tyrannical and oppressive government is a momentous victory. We are in solidarity with the students who have long been asserting their right to democratic processes and opposing corrupt and oppressive policies/practices.

We share our condolences to those who lost loved ones due to the brutal police and military attacks during the protests. We also share our concerns for the safety of family and friends belonging to religious/ethnic communities being victimized by opportunistic attacks.

In addition to assessing the situation in Bangladesh, we are also faced with exploring our responsibility as Bangladeshis living in Canada. In addition to supporting the demands of students, workers, and their families in Bangladesh, we must continue to explore our role in advancing the economic, civic, and political security for all.
